Another pronunciation question. Empty Another pronunciation question.

Post by Talibah 06.07.09 0:08

On meeting a highly learned gentleman over the weekend who has studied Occultism including Asetianism for many (many) years, something caught my attention and I wanted to pass it by everyone.

This friend pronounced 'Asetian' as - Ass-ee-shun, as oppsoed to the usual Ass-et-ian, claiming the origins of the word were derived from the actual pronunciation of Aset (Ay-see).

Can any one clarify, as lately I've also heard it pronounced this way by others.

To be honest I never heard that form of pronunciation, wether for the Asetians or Aset. I can't trace those origins with any of my sources. But I may be wrong.
What is your own opinion over it?

I don't know the answer either, Talibah, and it would be quite interesting to know. Also, I would like to add my own question to this thread: does anyone know how "Asetian" is pronounced in Latin languages, such as Portuguese and Spanish? I would venture "Asetiana/Asetiano" in the case of Spanish - and depending on gender... but who knows.

I do not know enough on the Portuguese and Spanish languages to have any idea on this one. Neutral
Maybe some of the other members would know.

It appears to me that your version can most likely apply to both the Portuguese and Spanish languages, and it seems quite accurate to my understanding. However I can't be fully sure, not being too experienced with the particulars of such languages. I will ask around and give you a more reliable response soon.

To be entirely honest I have never heard that pronunciation either.

When I first told my dad about it, he believed it was properly pronounced Aseeshun. It wasn't until I explained how the book focused around a belief in the deity Aset, that he understood why Aset-ean would be better.

Someone else has confirmed to me that it is Asetiano/Asetiana. I just hope I get to use the word in conversation soon.

As to Talibah's question, I have found some info on this page:

Those of you who have
already done some exploring have probably seen Isis’ Egyptian name
given as Aset—presumably to be pronounced “Ah-set,” or as Ast,
pronounced “Ahst,” or as Auset, pronounced “Aw-set or Ow-set.” Several
of these are possible, but not the mostly likely, pronunciations. One,
Ast, is simply a transliteration (letter for letter exchange of English
letters for hieroglyphs) and does not indicate a pronunciation.

Good input from everyone, thank you. Perhaps it is yet another British oddity in pronunciation (we have the habit of over complicating language).

I have always pronounced it as Ankhhape mentions above, but the alternative pronunciation I had heard struck me as interesting is all.

I personally pronounce it and believe it is as Ankhhape mentioned. Although, I have heard an individual pronounce it “Ah-se-she-un”.

That appears to be how Americans pronounce it. Thank you for pointing it out, I did not think about that as an example.
